About CarTaxHQ
CarTaxHQ is an independent reference for car taxes in the United States: the yearly personal property, excise and value-based taxes on owning a car, and the sales and use tax when you buy one. Rates come from state revenue departments and DMVs, state rate surveys (such as Connecticut OPM's mill rates and Virginia's local tax rate survey) and town and county tax offices. Every page shows the source and the date we last checked it.
The calculator estimates; your bill depends on how your town values your car, proration, exemptions and fees. If a rate is out of date, email hello@cartaxhq.com with the source and we'll fix it.
For software and AI agents: every state's formula and local rates are in plain JSON at /api/states.json and /api/<state>.json; see /llms.txt.
CarTaxHQ is free. It may earn a commission from some links (for example, car loan refinancing); that never affects the rates shown.
