Wyoming car tax

Wyoming's yearly county registration fee works as a value-based car tax: 3% of a percentage of the factory price that drops from 60% to 15% over six years. You pay it to the county treasurer with the $30 state fee. There is no separate personal property tax on cars.

W.S. 31-3-101(a)(i). The county fee is 3% of 60%, 50%, 40%, 30%, 20%, and from year 6 on 15% of factory price plus special equipment. The minimum is $5. 'Year of service' is treated as model-year age. The $30 state registration fee is extra. 2026 HB0030, which would have cut fees after year 6, failed.

Questions

How is Wyoming car registration calculated?

County fee = 3% × factory price × the year's percentage (60%, 50%, 40%, 30%, 20%, then 15%), plus the $30 state fee.

Does Wyoming have a car property tax?

No. The value-based county registration fee takes its place.

Can I deduct Wyoming car taxes on my federal return?

Yes, the value-based part is deductible. Wyoming's yearly car tax is based on the car's value, so it can be claimed as personal property tax if you itemize on your federal return (subject to the SALT cap). Flat registration fees are not deductible.
