Missouri car tax
Missouri taxes cars every year as personal property, assessed at one-third of value as of January 1, times the local levy. The county collector bills it, and you need a paid receipt to renew your plates. Buying a car costs 4.225% state sales tax plus local.
RSMo §137.115. Assessment = 33⅓% of the October-issue trade-in value in the guide chosen by the State Tax Commission. Tax = assessment × total levy per $100. You must list the car with the county assessor by March 1.

Buying a car in Missouri: one-time tax
Missouri state sales/use tax on motor vehicles — 4.225%, plus local sales tax where you live. Your trade-in is subtracted before tax.
Local sales tax for your home address is added. Paid to the DOR when you title the car.
Registration and due dates
Registration is $18.25–$51.25 a year by taxable horsepower, plus a $9 processing fee. A title costs $8.50.
Due every year by December 31 (penalties after). You need a paid prior-year receipt or a statement of non-assessment to renew registration.
Cut what your car costs in Missouri
Car tax is set by your town, but your loan and insurance aren't. Refinancing a car loan at a lower rate often saves more each year than the tax itself.
Questions
How is Missouri car property tax calculated?
Trade-in value × 33⅓% × the local levy per $100 ÷ 100.
Do I need a receipt to renew plates?
Yes. You need the paid prior-year personal property tax receipt, or a waiver.
Can I deduct Missouri car taxes on my federal return?
Yes, the value-based part is deductible. Missouri's yearly car tax is based on the car's value, so it can be claimed as personal property tax if you itemize on your federal return (subject to the SALT cap). Flat registration fees are not deductible.
