Mississippi car tax

Mississippi charges a yearly ad valorem tax on cars, paid at the county tax collector when you renew your tag. The assessed value is 30% of the DOR value (from MSRP, depreciated over 10 years) times local millage, minus a state Legislative Tag Credit. Buying a car costs 5% sales tax.

Assessment = 30% of the DOR value (MSRP depreciated on a 10-year schedule, $100 minimum assessed value). Tax = assessment × county/city/school millage ÷ 1,000, minus the Legislative Tag Credit (a % set by DOR each year).

Questions

How is Mississippi car tax calculated?

DOR value × 30% × local millage ÷ 1,000, minus the Legislative Tag Credit.

What is the Legislative Tag Credit?

A state-funded reduction in the vehicle ad valorem tax. DOR sets the percentage each year.

Can I deduct Mississippi car taxes on my federal return?

Yes, the value-based part is deductible. Mississippi's yearly car tax is based on the car's value, so it can be claimed as personal property tax if you itemize on your federal return (subject to the SALT cap). Flat registration fees are not deductible.
