Kansas car tax
Kansas charges a yearly motor vehicle property tax, paid at the county treasurer with registration renewal. The value comes from a class value for the car, reduced 15% for each year of age. The tax is 20% of that value times the county's average levy.
K.S.A. 79-5105. Value = class midpoint × (1 − 15% per year of age). Tax = value × 20% × the county average levy ÷ 1,000 (the county-wide average, not your district). The minimum is $24 ($12 for model years 1980 and older).

Kansas sales/use tax — 6.5%, plus local sales tax where you live. Your trade-in is subtracted before tax.
Local rates for your address are added. Trade-in credit: medium confidence.
Registration and due dates
Registration is $30 (up to 4,500 lb) or $40 (over 4,500 lb). Hybrids pay $70, plug-in hybrids $100, and EVs $165. A title costs $10.
Paid every year with registration renewal at the county treasurer (staggered by last name).
Cut what your car costs in Kansas
Car tax is set by your town, but your loan and insurance aren't. Refinancing a car loan at a lower rate often saves more each year than the tax itself.
Questions
How is Kansas car tax calculated?
Class value less 15% a year × 20% × the county average levy ÷ 1,000. The minimum is $24.
Why is my tax the same as my neighbor's in another city?
Kansas uses the county average levy, not your specific taxing district.
Can I deduct Kansas car taxes on my federal return?
Yes, the value-based part is deductible. Kansas's yearly car tax is based on the car's value, so it can be claimed as personal property tax if you itemize on your federal return (subject to the SALT cap). Flat registration fees are not deductible.
